CB United Navy Recap

The Columbia Basin team from Moses Lake proved to a physical handful for Sodium. All game long the two teams pounded and grinded it out. Half time found the teams deadlocked at 0-0.

With 5 minutes left it started taking the toll on CB United. Sodium begain a barrage of shots that included 2 headers over the crossbar, 3 shots wide and several stopped by the keeper. All-in-all they kept the lady warriors in check to end the match 0-0.

Sodium vs Montana ODP Final

The lady warriors tore it up against Montana's best, handing the ODP squad a 2-0 loss.

Sodium kept the pressure on all day. Emmy Owens scored first on an Easton Kawawaki deflected shot to give the lady warriors a 1-0 lead. Just before half Easton again penetrated deep down the right side, lofted a cross where a flying Marisa Reid put a shin guard on it for what would prove the winner!

It got exciting late as a collision with keeper Taylor Luty caused the ball to squirt out in front of the net to a wide open Montana forward. A sliding Jadyn McMillan cause the shot to deflect wide and keep the shut-out intact. An outstanding play!

Rest, lunch and back to the field at 3pm for the night cap against Columbia Basin United Navy.

Keep up the great work Sodium!

THUSC Invades Pasco

All day long caravans will be leaving the Rose City and surrounding metropolitan areas in a 4 hour trek to Pasco, WA. Kind of reminiscent of storming the beach at Normandy! 10 teams full of anticipation will be raining down on Pasco, each with visions of bringing home a championship. This tournament could turn into one of the highest medal producing tournaments in THUSC history!

I know the lady warriors will do their best to defend their 2009 title and will be cheering on the sidelines as the other THUSC squads go to war!

Best of luck to ALL the THUSC teams!

New & Positive Perspective

As I looked back on February I realized I was looking at what we were doing in the wrong perspective. Sure, we were 1-0-4 in our 5 games but let's break it down.

We tied LOSC 0-0. They are the defending State Champion. We possessed the ball longer and had more shots on goal.

We beat Magic 1-0. Magic was coming off a couple of big wins and is the upcoming team. If Sahalie hadn't had another spectacular game, it could have been a lot more.

Tied FC Portland 0-0. We outplayed them. More time of possession and shots on goal.

Tied Hotspur 1-1. Were down late, kept our composure and scored. Had several late runs deep that could have produced a winner.

Tied OR Rush 0-0. We played better in this game than we had the last couple. Started gelling with and trusting your team mates. Had possession in Rush's side of field 85% of game. Had many more opportunities to score.

Take Aways
Defense is playing great. The last time we let in a score before this weekend was October 18th of last year. We lead the bracket with least goals allowed with 4.

In February our midfields played exceptional. They are instrumental in setting up the attack and controlling the ball in our opponents side.

Our forwards, even though they haven't racked up a zillion goals, have created a zillion opportunities. In February our forwards have out shot our opponents 4 to 1 (my best guess).

So keep creating opportunities and the goals will fall. Keep shooting and they will find the net. Defense, keep getting better every practice and every game. we have never let a game out of our control and if we continue to do that, we will control our own destiny. You have shown you can play with the best because you are one of the best. Heads up, keep striving to get better, take away from this month what you can do to get better and strengthen the things you do best.
You are a contender Sodium. You are a top playing Premier Gold team that has a bright future ahead of you. So concentrate on the task at hand and focus on your goals.

Good luck at Blue Mountain next weekend and lets repeat as the BME Champions. The Champions you know you are.

Trust

You know that OR Rush, along with LOSC, Magic and the rest, are all just teams. They are all made up of a number of players & coaches who are striving for a couple common goals; the development of their players, and to do the best they can at State Cup. In this way, they are all the same. What differentiates the teams is not the color of their jersey or the color of their skin. What differentiates a successful team from an also-ran is what's inside.

It's whats inside their head. Their mental make up. Their ability to recognize when things aren't going great, the symptoms, and do what it takes to regain that greatness. Individually and then collectively as a team.

It's whats inside their chest. Their heart. Their passion for the game. Their decision not to take defeat or mediocrity lightly but to sacrifice whatever they have to improve themselves and better their team. And to expect nothing less from their teammates. To trust in one another.

This Sodium, is the greatness I have witnessed from you in the past, and the greatness you will experience again in the future.

Take these last few games and learn; Did you give everything you had? Did you leave your best on the field or keep 50% in reserve? You can accomplish great things if you put your minds and hearts behind yourself and your team.

Tomorrow we take on an admirable foe in OR Rush. A team who has experienced setbacks and overcome them. A team, like ours, that has experienced greatness. What will set us apart tomorrow is what we have inside. Our ability to rise up and meet any challenge head on. To experience victory in the face of defeat. Your ability to sacrifice so the girl next to you can succeed. For you will rise as one. United.

Trust in yourself. Trust in your team.

Those who believe yell; GO SODIUM!!

Saturday Results

There is one thing certain in sports; you can't win if you don't show up to play. Thus was the case in todays game against SSC Hotspur. Sodium came out flat. No communication, passing or passion. The results; Sodium took on a motivated SSC squad that took it to them.
Sodium had a couple breaks early that they couldn't convert. They then settled in for the half. The second opened the 0-0 tie with actually more of the same until Dani Brown broke open a header and flew in for the SSC go ahead score! This shot in the face woke up the Sodium team. But not until 4 minutes left in the contest did they actually start to look like the team they are. A couple of position changes brought about a change in chemistry. The girls began to attack the goal. Easton, Lexi, Mac, Hannah, Kelly & Aliyah started to push the ball deep. With about 2 minutes left Sodium had advanced the ball into the 6-yard box. Hannah Lautenbach dropped it back to a charging Mac Kearney who found the far side of the net for the tying score! Sodium found themselves several more times with opportunities but time ran out before Sodium could capitalize. As the fans cheered for Hotspur the Sodium faithful were shaking their heads.

After the game coach Tom said; "We sure make other teams days...", referring to this and the FC game which both ended in ties.

The lady warriors need to learn from todays game. They need to understand that to compete at this level you have to show up every game, every day. No team can be taken for granted or underestimated. If we bring the same lackluster game tomorrow against Rush we will be looking at 4-0 defeat instead of a possible victory.

From the stands at Aloha HS we will be scream'n; GO SODIUM!!

Upcoming Games

Sodium sits atop the U14 Premier Gold bracket but will have to fight to stay there. It is literally anyones ballgame at this point. Both Sodium and Rush play 2 games this weekend, one against each other, so whomever can bring their 'A' game will emerge on top.

The Matchups
Saturday
SSC Hotspur vs THUSC
SSC Hotspur has been running hot & cold as of late. If Sodium's defense can maintain SSC's exciting forward, Dani, then they have a good shot at victory. Let her run loose and it could turn into a long afternoon. THUSC's defense has been very strong and consistent all fall and into spring. Speaking of exciting forwards, Sodium will have Mac Kearney back in the lineup this weekend. Freshly released by her physical therapist Mac is chomping at the bit to get back on the field and mix it up. Immediately following an outstanding performance for the 96 ODP squad in Phoenix Mac injured her ankle in practice and missed the next three games. Glad to have the Mac attack ready for battle! THUSC 2-0.

USA HotShots vs OR Rush
I think this will prove to be one of the best matches this weekend. Both teams are physical and aggressive. This will be only the second time these teams have met since September when Rush took a 2-0 decision. HotShots are coming off a victory over FC Portland and Rush will be coming from a tie with ESUFC Arseanl. Very tough to call but I will go with Rush 1-0.

FC Portland vs LOSC Extreme
As much as I like FC and know they come on strong late in the season, I just don't think they currently have the firepower to hang with the 1-2 punch of Chloe and Bella for LOSC. I hope they prove me wrong but I have to go with my gut on this one. LOSC 2-0.

Sunday
THUSC vs OR Rush
This will be the match up to watch. When "The Beast from the East", the always dominating OR Rush rolls into town, you can always expect an epic battle. Sodium is looking forward to playing Rush on our turf. Health will be a factor as the Sodium squad still has a few players nursing injuries that will see limited action at best. But from what I have heard, Rush will be without one of their stars, Hadley, who...had...surgery? I haven't had a chance to get confirmation on anything yet so I can't really comment. All I know is Hadley has given the Sodium defense fits for many, many seasons and is a joy to watch as she brings fire to any game. It's always unfortunate when any athlete is injured. Hopes for a speedy recovery from Sodium! In my opinion Rush is one of the top teams in Oregon and it seems the last few time these two have met it has been a stalemate. If Sodiums defense can maintain there solid play and Mac can ignite the forwards with her fierce style of play, Sodium could strengthen its stronghold on the number one spot. THUSC 1-0.

EMFC Magic vs LOSC Extreme
Magic, currently in 3rd but knocking on the door, only has one match, but oh what a match it will be against defending State Champion LOSC Extreme. LOSC will be coming off a game with FC Portland. Some bloggers are predicting a Magic victory. Personally, the way Magic is playing, I think they will give LOSC a run for their money. They are 1-0 against Extreme. (I am going to wimp-out and call it a 1-1 draw)

SSC HotSpur vs ESUFC Arsenal
This game is the hardest for me to call. If HotSpur is 'on' then watch out! Then again, Arsenal has really elevated their play of late and is coming off a tie with powerhouse Rush so they should be riding that wave. Out of the three predictions I read it was a perfect 3-way split. I am going to look at this as consistency winning out. Arsenal 1-0.

It it looking like a very exciting weekend indeed. Great match ups and also some pretty decent weather!

From the stands the Sodium faithful cheer; GO SODIUM!!

Weekend and Bracket Updates

Saturday found Sodium facing the much improved EMFC Magic. It was a hard fought game from whistle to  whistle with both teams mounting several attacks. Just before half Laura Camp lined up for one of her patented corner kicks. A stutter-step or two and then she delivered into the box. A scrum ensued which ended in Jill Farley punching in what would prove to be the game winner! The crowed erupted as the girls surrounded Jill. The second half was the Sahalie Doe (Magic Keeper) show. She has proved a very valuable asset to the Magic and she showed the amazed crowed on several occasions as she leaped high above to snatch the ball on corners or diving headlong to stop the many Sodium attempts. Hats off to Mrs. Doe this evening for a great effort.

Sunday Sodium faced FC Portland. FC has proved the last few years that they are always strong down the stretch. Despite a slow start this spring the FC squad has always been a handful for Sodium and today was no different. As I mentioned in another forum this game was more about missed opportunity than anything. Taylor Luty stopped one actual shot on goal but the Sodium forwards, despite people playing a couple different positions to alter the chemistry, just couldn't find the net. It certainly wasn't for lack of trying though. Break-a-ways were left wide. Corner kicks off the post and so on. It didn't help Sodium's cause that FC Portland's outstanding keeper, Rachel, and the rest of the FC defense was playing well. They certainly did what they had to to keep the ball out of the net and notch a 0-0 tie.

From the Sidelines
This is where I write my honest opinion on the games and then take heat for it on the other forums. I really toned it down lately, trying to be PC and not say anything that someone might take wrong or whatever. Well, those days are over my friends. It is too difficult for me to try and sugarcoat things and watch what I say all the time when that is not what I feel or observed. Frankly, if peoples skin is so thin that they are affected by what I say on this blog, then maybe they have deeper psychological issues they need to address first before saying negative things about me.
I am disabling the RSS Feeds and notifications from any & all Oregon Youth Soccer related sites. Honestly, I, the team, parents, coaches or club couldn't care less what is written there anyway. The only thing that really matters is what's accomplished on the field.
So here is my official disclaimer; If you don't like what you read here or it makes you upset or angry in any way, shape or form, then discontinue reading immediately. I will not or would not force anyone to read this blog. You read it of your own free will. If you feel the urge to comment then make sure it is to inform me of a statistic or fact I may have cited incorrectly. If you wine, complain, bitch, accuse or otherwise badmouth me, the team, the coaches, fans or club, I will delete it. Period. Frankly I don't care what you think or if your feelings are hurt. I do care if I was incorrect in a fact I stated. This blog is intended as a vehicle for my opinions, period. It will be humorous, it will boost up Sodium and the club and no one else. It will not hesitate to point out the following; If we play bad and get beat. If we play good and get beat. If we play good and win. I will say if I think another team played well and if I thought they played bad. Take it or leave it, just don't complain to me about it because I just don't care.

I think it is pathetic I have to write this disclaimer but it is intended to thwart the closed minded, PC crowed with the thin skin. The people who aren't competitive and don't care if they win or lose. I care.

My Philosophy
I am a coach with a successful record in every sport I was involved with. I got there by thinking like a coach and not candy-coating things but being direct. If a teams sucks and they beat us, we suck. I'm not going to take heat because I didn't say the other team was better. They WEREN'T better, we sucked. Period.
If we should have pounded a team 3-0 and tied 0-0 it was because we played down to their level and couldn't finish. It wasn't because they were better than we were. On the other hand, if we take the field and get our butts kicked 3-0 it was probably because the other team was better. I will cite what we did correctly and praise the team. I will cite what we did poorly because I would hope we would learn from it. I get crap for being 'mean' to the girls. For God sakes, these are Premier Gold Bracket athletes, if they can't take a little constructive criticism then they need to go play REC ball or to the league where they don't keep score. Not here. Keep that in mind when you read about your team.
If you aren't on the field or court to get better and help the team develop and win, then go home. I was always taught that if you play a sport you love than you should push yourself to be the best you can and thus help the team be the best they can. Otherwise, you are a burden and the team would be better off without you.

So, I'm back in the saddle again. So sit down, buckle your safety harness and get ready for spring league and State Cup. Sodium Style.

GO SODIUM!

Weekend Boost

Sodium can take sole possession of the U14 Premier Gold bracket with a pair of victories this weekend.

Saturday's game vs the always tough EMFC Magic with their new found chemistry could prove to be a test for the lady warriors as the take home field (REC #2) for the 5:30pm nightcap. Magic has only dealt Sodium one defeat in recent memory but with the momentum they have coming into the match, they might be hard to handle. Sodium enters the match at nearly full strength so we should be off to the races on offense and solid as a rock on defense.
Sundays game vs FC Portland (REC #2 @ 2:30pm) shouldn't present a problem for the lady warriors. FC struggled in fall league but can never be counted out down the stretch. Historically FC will rebounded and give teams all they can handle during State Cup. Should be a good match up.

If Sodium can dish out a pair of shut-outs this weekend (with the help that Rush has a bye week) they will take possession of first place in the bracket.

Come out and cheer them to victory!!

From under an umbrella at REC #2 we'll cheer; GO SODIUM!!

Weekend Recap

Well the first weekend of Spring league is under way the Lady Warriors coming out of the gate with something to prove. The Saturday game proved to be not as physical as anticipated but a battle none the less.
The match started out in typical Sodium style with constant pressure on the Hotshot goal. Midway through the first half on yet another Sodium opportunity, Aliyah Chance flashed to goal and ripped the net for the game opening score! The crowd cheered as the Sodium squad was beginning to get their balance. Just before the half whistle Aliyah again was driving deep, this time down the right side. She drove hard and right footed a rifle crossing pass. Emmy Owens had shielded the defender and was placed right in front of the net to take the pass and blast it passed the Hotshot keeper for second, and what would prove the final, Sodium goal. Sodium took a 2-0 lead into half. The second turned out to be a little sloppy as Sodium, even though they had multiple attempts on goal, resorted to a "kick-n-chase" style instead of controlling the ball and creating opportunities. It was still fun to watch and a great opening victory!

Sunday was the battle we had all anticipated when Sodium took on cross town rival LOSC Extreme. Play was fast and calculated, physical and controlled. Both teams mid-fielders and defense took a pounding. And even though Sodium had just a couple more opportunities, the final remained 0-0. It was a great game.

Around the Bracket
ESUFC Arsenal over SSC Hotspur 1-0
Arsenal is the team to watch in my opinion. They have played all other teams tough in the fall and it looks like they haven't missed a beat into spring.
EMFC Magic over Sherwood Force 5-1
The score isn't officially posted but my sources are seldom wrong. The Magic remains on a roll. 5 goals against another Gold Bracket team is an accomplishment. Keep an eye on Magic folks, they could wreak some havoc in the bracket!
ESUFC Arsenal tied OR Rush 95G 1-1
As mentioned earlier, Arsenal is the team to watch.

Notes From The Sidelines
The victory over Hotshots was a little more one-sided than the 2-0 score indicated. Both new-addition Easton Kawawaki and Mercury's Katie Moeller each had a couple opportunities that just missed the mark.
The LOSC game though, it was a war. I think LOSC had 3 actual shots on goal. Sodium, maybe 5. The play was really confined to the mid-field with the defense pushing up to help. Bella (LOSC keeper) played her normal outstanding game and kept, what could have been the winning goal, out buy a diving fingertip save. Any other keeper in the net, it would have been 1-0 Sodium. An awesome performance.
Wow, what can I say about Arsenal. They seem to be firing on all cylinders right now. Glad we aren't scheduled to play them in Spring. And Magic, right in the hunt. Both these teams are going tough as nails down the stretch.

Next Up
2/13 vs Magic at REC #2 @ 5:30pm
2/14 vs FC Portland at REC #2 @ 2:30pm

From the stands at REC #2 the faithful fans yell: GO SODIUM!

Tomorrow...

It all starts tomorrow ladies. I don't have to tell you the history we have with both Keizer & LOSC. I know I will see it in your eyes in the morning. I know Taylor started talking about it last night after practice. The rivalry, the 'Bad Blood' if you would. You know it's going to be a battle. A war. Bodies will fly, whistles will blow and tears will fall onto the West Salem HS turf. You know what you need to do. Many of you have been playing for our U15 & U16 teams in preparation. Many of you have been busting your butts during private lessons for just this moment. All have given what they have at practice since fall season. You know what you need you to do. You are ready.
Tomorrow you will take the field and you will TAKE the field. You will play Sodium style of controlled aggression. The mid-fielders will match up blow for blow, will win the 50/50's, and Easton will get her first taste of what it's like going to war in the Sodium black. The defense, at full stride, will be as impermeable as it has been all year. They will look at the forwards and smile there devious smiles, beaconing them to 'Bring it', only to shut them down. And the new found strength at forward. Oh this will be a weekend to rival any ODP trip. They will run faster, pass crisper and along with the mids will attack. Again and again and again. The last time this team took the field they scored 8 unanswered goals. They were like a pack of wolves, once they smelled the fear, the defeat, they elevated their play.
This will a be a test for all tomorrow. Never underestimate your opponent but relentlessly pursue, play with controlled aggression as you have been lately then, when you expose a weakness, attack.

I am not telling you anything you don't already know or know how to do, its just a subtle reminder.

This weekend will test the marrow of the Sodium squad. How badly they want it. I think they have been exhibiting it in their work ethics. They will go far this season and they will be a force on the field.

They bleed the black & green. They are united as one. They are SODIUM.

Believe

Onto the pitch we march, stripped of all but pride and courage.

Alone we stand as one, united as a team.

Believe...

Preparation

In about 48 hours the Spring league will be upon us. All we do from here on out will affect our State Cup placement. Are we ready? Are YOU ready?
All the work that was put in during futsol, guest playing, private sessions, practices and fitness prepare us for the next 3 months. True, we have Blue Mountain Exchange (WA) and Celtic Cup (CA) thrown in to keep us fresh, but all focus from here needs to be on league play. Out of the gate we face two formidable opponents in Keizer and Lake Oswego. They are always tough, always physical. If Sodium sticks to its game plan and plays it's calculated, controlled game and lets the ref's handle extracurricular activity, they should do just fine. Additions in key positions will help boost bench strength allowing Sodium to keep constant pressure on their opponents from every angle.

Keep your eye on the prize lady warriors but never underestimate your opponents. View each and every game as if the season depended on it. The time is now to rise up as a team and put to rest any doubt our critics may have in regards to the Sodium resolve or personnel. And, if you drop a game or two, that should should fuel the fire within even further. Remember how it felt to lose 0-1 in the quarterfinals last year? I remember a few players, with tears in their eyes, vowing that that would never happen again. Remember how if felt to beat that same team in back to back games to win the United Cup? Proving who was dominant.

Every team we face in this league we have beaten. Some have beaten us as well. The team who approaches each and every game with a fierce desire to be the best, WILL be the best. The team who goes into each game confident that no one has worked harder, no one is more prepared, no one wants it or deserves it more, will be victorious. Is the YOU Sodium?

I have watched you work. I have seen many of you in private lessons on your own time. I have watched as you have guested played up one or even two years and had profound impacts on those teams. I have watched you grow in the off season. The time is now for you to put the pieces together Sodium. You have depth of talent I will put up against all others. Desire in your eyes and passion in your hearts. I believe I have witnessed a new attitude develop. One that was lacking last year. The attitude of drawing first blood and never letting up. Like beating Idaho 8-0 for example. Put the cleat on your opponents neck and don't let up until the final whistle. The killer instinct that was missing last year is alive and thriving in 2010. And rightly it should. You have the fight in you now, and the talent to back it up.

When you take the field this weekend take a look at the player next to you. Is she ready? Does the fire burn in her heart? Can you count on her to have your back, and you hers? If you see a player letting down on the field are you prepared to call her out? You better be. The success of your team depends on each and every one of you taking personal responsibility to give it your best. For 70 minutes you will be asked to give it everything you've got. To make the sacrifice for the team. I've watched you do it many, many times and will watch you do it many, many more times. Dig deep lady warriors for the time is upon us to battle together. To pull together as a team and rise up. To rise up above your adversaries and be the team you were meant you be. The black and green of United.

You are SODIUM.
